What’s the downside?

The cost is demanding when it comes to getting a certification by any of the third-party certification programs. Many small, family-owned coffee farms produce organic coffee because they can’t afford chemical pesticides and fertilisers anyway. But they also don’t have financial means to pay for the certification process, and therefore can’t earn the higher price for their beans despite them being organic and are of high quality. Also, in term of the certification process, the inspection is operated once a year, so it’s hard for even a diligent inspector to ensure that there are no synthetics used.
