With all the hype about organic products and it continue to increase in demand within Australia, it would be interesting to explore the organic makeup where it at and if it is worth investing in its’ current advancement.

We all want health, and we all want natural beauty, in days when we are not feeling our best, we look for makeup to give us what we should be when we have are at our best. Makeup and beauty is a forever growing business. However, not all makeup is equal. In our makeup history, we have put harmful products that have high concentrations of lead, mercury, arsenic and even radiation. Even though the colour is amazing but many had lead to physical illness and death. Even at this modern age, there are still ingredients that we are concern about. However, the makeup and beauty industries are still booming despite hiccups from the past.

There is a rise in demand for products that use more plant-based and natural ingredients, that is more healing then harming. Products that enhance one skin yet give the desired look we want to create in colour, pigmentation and durability. The March 2015 report by market research firm Kline & Company estimates the “natural products” industry is at $33 billion worldwide. A 2015 report by Nielsen found that 53% of consumers surveyed said that an “all-natural” description was moderately or very important to them.

The big demand for organic make up makes manufacturers put lots of effort and focus on this market, to provide numerous products to satisfy the consumers. However, making a functional, effective organic make up product isn’t just simply put all the safe, natural ingredients together, it isn’t easy at all. There is a lot of difficulty in producing an organic product to perform as well as a conventional one. Let’s dig deeper into this issue and find out why.

What is organic make up and why does everyone want it?

Organic makeup is makeup product made from completely natural ingredients, free of irritants, additives and harmful substances such as preservatives, parabens, chemical dyes, fragrance, and oil. This makes organic make up an ideal product for people with sensitive skin and usually get bad reactions out of industrially made products.

The biggest advantage organic make up has over conventional makeup products is it doesn’t contain any harmful and dangerous preservatives and chemicals. Some substances usually found in conventional makeup are paragons and phthalates, both are believed to cause cancer. These chemicals are endocrine disruptors. They can affect mood swings, fertility issues, and hormonal imbalances. With organic makeup, you don’t have to worry about these scary substances. The ingredients used are entirely natural and don’t contain any preservatives or artificial fragrances. The ingredients mostly have a mild, pleasant smell and are gentle and safe. They are less likely to cause breakouts, and of course, protect you from the risk of all the serious diseases mentioned above.

Also, choosing organic makeup is choosing to protect the environment. The organic way of planting and harvesting the ingredients means that there is no harmful chemical released into the air, soil or water to contaminate them, thus protecting the wildlife.

Everyone knows organic make up is a safer, better choice for both health and the environment than the conventional one. However organic makeup still hasn’t quite won the market over its counterpart. The question is: Why?

The difficulties of organic make up?

“Chemical – free” does not exist

Many brands like to advertise their products as “don’t contain any chemical.” Most people also believe that organic makes up of 100% organic ingredients from a natural source. This, however, is not the case.  The truth is no cosmetic product is free of chemical because such a product is impossible to make.

When people talk about “chemical-free” cosmetic, they mean products that don’t contain any synthetic chemical, ones that can cause cancer such as parabens or triclosan. Companies often use this term to convince people that their products are “green” because the public has become too used to associate “chemical” with “harmful substances’.

Organic ingredients in makeup are not contaminated with toxic chemicals. However, they still contain a variety of other chemicals, though approved. The typical examples are zinc oxide (ZnO) and titanium dioxide (TiO) nanoparticles used in sunscreen. So if you are looking for “organic sunscreen,” don’t. Because they don’t exist.

Another problem is “impurities”.  Natural products made with natural wax, oils or the mineral can still have aluminium, titanium, nickel, and cobalt, as well as cadmium and chromium. All these are carcinogens and can cause disabilities in children. But it is virtually impossible to get rid of them because they persist and occur in the natural environment, including water.

Organic makeup don’t perform as well as conventional makeup

The chemical, the cosmetic industry has been developing for a long time. And it has invented many formulas and chemical alterations to give us the ideal textures and colours. With organic makeup, you are likely to not get the flawlessly smooth skin like with the traditional one. They may not feel as light, and there may be staining, You are also limited in your choice of colour and tone because an organic product can only offer you the natural colours. If you love vibrant colours like bright blues and purples, you will have a harder time finding organic makeup. Only if you’re a lover of neutral tones, this will be no problem for you.

Organic makeup offers limited choice in colour and tone

And another thing is that organic products usually contain less ingredient than the conventional one. For many people, this is a sign indicating that the organic make up is “safer”. This may be true in some cases, but for others, fewer ingredients don’t equal better. Many ingredients demand additional additives to work and to offer any benefits. For organic products, there aren’t any additives, so there are chances they can’t penetrate the skin as well as normal makeup.

Organic makeup doesn’t last as long as conventional makeup

What the thing about conventional makeup is we can wear them on our face all day without them falling off. Organic makeup can’t give you this. Without necessary chemicals, natural products aren’t waterproof enough to last a whole day.

It isn’t waterproof enough, and it doesn’t last long enough. Without preservatives, the lifespan of an organic product is significantly shorter than that of a normal product. Even though there are natural preservatives out there, generally organic makeup still only lasts from 3 to 6 months. So if you choose this type of product, it’s better to buy a small amount at a time and make sure to use it quickly.

You may still get infections or allergy

Organic makeup doesn’t mean you are safe from any reaction. People can still be allergic to natural ingredients. Many people are allergic to turmeric, honey, or even tomato! So you still have to check the ingredient list carefully and do a test beforehand in case you are allergic to something.

There is also a risk of infection. Preservative in conventional product work to prevent fungi and bacteria to persist in the makeup container. The natural preservative can also do this. However, it is not as reliable. So you have to check your make up very frequently in case it has been affected by bacteria. You may get rid of it to buy a new one.

Organic makeup can be expensive.

So organic makeup may not work as well, has a shorter life span, yet they cost way more than traditional makeup. Since the ingredients are natural, the manufacturing process is strictly demanding and don’t use any synthetic chemicals; these products are usually more expensive. So if you want to be a delicate green life lover who wants to devote to using natural, environmentally friendly products. You have to make sure you can afford to.
